Twenty members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. vigorously pursued a public service commitment to making a difference in the city of Chester and the surrounding communities in Delaware County. As a result of this dedication and cohesive determination, the Chester Alumnae Chapter was chartered in a ceremony on January 22, 1994. In addition, the chapter was recognized by The Epsilon Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in 1996 for its public service efforts. Within the structure of this energetic body of sorors, several ongoing programs and projects have emerged.
13 new members were initiated into the sisterhood in 1997 and became members of the chapter. Chester Alumnae launched its website in 2001. The year 2001 brought new members to the chapter when 12 new members were initiated. A member of the Chester Alumnae chapter's Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy was selected to participate in the Presidential Academy at the National Convention in Atlanta in 2002. The chapter was recognized for its achievements and participation in the Delta Sigma Theta International Day of Service with a focus on HIV/AIDS in 2002. The chapter increased its membership once again in 2004 when it initiated 25 new members and again in 2009. 2012 brought 34 new members and 2020 29 new members.
The chapter was selected as the Small Chapter of the Year in 2008 at the Delta Sigma Theta National Convention in Orlando, Florida. The chapter was also recognized with the Eastern Region Technology and Information Compliance Award for its website and use of technology within the chapter at the 2010 Regional Conference in Baltimore and again in 2011 in Atlantic City. Chester Alumnae was also selected to receive the 2011 Human and Civil Rights Award by the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA). Most recently Chester Alumnae was selected as Alumnae Chapter of the Year Medium for 2020-2021. CAC was also recognized for It's exemplary programing when the chapter won the Physical and Mental Health Award for 2020-2021.
Chester Alumnae Chapter is a life member of the NAACP and partners with the local branch to register voters and provide voter education. The chapter is an active member of the Inter-Greek Council in the city of Chester. Along with the other Greek organizations in the city, a Thanksgiving dinner is prepared for over 150 senior citizens.
Chester Alumnae has given scholarships to deserving young women in Delaware County to help further their college education since 1994. In addition, the chapter continues to provide service to the community through its programs and projects.
